Black Lives Matter Poster

This poster started as a high school project, and I decided to digitize it and make it into more of a graphic poster. I have always been a very political person and I care deeply about the lives and rights of others, especially marginalized groups that still suffer in todays society. I created this poster to try to hold up a mirror to how drastically different people get treated just because of the color of their skin. The original poster I created was simply pen on paper, but I then used the layout and created the new one using Illustrator.

The Assets

The Black Lives Matter movement uses a lot of imagery of three equal stripes, often in this yellow color. I started this project in high school before the movement was ‘mainstream’ so I added these stripes to tie the poster in with the movement.

I used a stereotypical black mans silhouette for this graphic, putting the words inside his face. Many of the cops who murder black men and children on the job use the excuse they “feared for their lives” as a reason for their killing, even if the person of color posed no threat.

I used a stereotypical white mans silhouette for this graphic, also putting the words inside his face. Many times when a white man is taken into custody for crimes he’s committed, the police excuse it stating he’s “just a kid,” even if he poses a significant threat.

The Black Lives Matter movement uses the font “Cornerstone” so I downloaded it and used it for my main type elements and the words inside of them mens faces. I used a more basic font for the information to make sure there was contrast and they were easily legible.
